Ceramic Industry

Ceramic industry is classified with codes 232 to 234 of NACE - Rev.2, and includes five sub-sectors: bricks and roof tiles (which includes also clay blocks for beam-and-block floor systems); wall and floor tiles; sanitaryware, tableware and ornamental ceramic articles (porcelain, earthenware and stoneware); and technical ceramics (insulators, refractories and technical products).

Considering 2011 as the reference year, the sector has 385 companies, 303 of which are actually active, and accounts for 15.205 jobs.

The Portuguese ceramic industry has an annual turnover of € 923,5 millions and its gross added value is € 338,8 millions.

It's an export oriented sector that, in 2011,has sold to 151 different markets around the world.

The ceramic sector exports amounted € 557,4 millions, while imports were less than € 116,5 millions. The sector's coverage rate of imports by exports, has reached 478.7% in 2011. The trade balance of ceramic products (+ € 440.9 million) represents one of the highest figures of the Portuguese manufacturing industry.
